Renovating in Barking & Dagenham

Many houses here are ex-council and have changed little since they were built, which makes them a clean starting point for a full renovation.

What works here

We renovate whole houses here to a high specification: new layout, new services, better insulation and finishes that feel considered.

Work inside the house is covered by building control. Changing the front, such as windows, porches or the roof, can need permission depending on the street. Applications go to the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. We handle them for you.

Questions

Can you fully renovate an ex-council house?

Yes. We replan the layout, renew the electrics, plumbing and heating, improve the insulation and finish the house to the same standard as any other NU project.

Can we live in the house during the renovation?

Sometimes, for smaller or phased work. For a full renovation most clients move out, which is safer and usually quicker. We will advise at the first visit.

Do I need planning permission to renovate a house in Barking & Dagenham?

Internal work on an unlisted house rarely needs it. Listed houses need listed building consent for almost any change, and in a conservation area new windows, roofs and front elevations often need permission.

Can we live in the house during the renovation?

For a whole-house renovation it is usually better to move out. Work to a single floor, or work in phases, can be planned around you staying in.
